As the summer season draws to a close, there’s no better way to bid it farewell than with an unforgettable getaway to Pedernales Falls State Park. Located just a short drive from Johnson City, Texas, this natural haven offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventure, relaxation, and breathtaking scenery.

The Allure of Pedernales Falls

The park’s namesake, Pedernales Falls, is a stunning cascade of water flowing over layers of limestone, creating a picturesque landscape that is a sight to behold. The Pedernales River, tranquil most of the time, can transform into a turbulent torrent with a sudden rise in water levels, offering a fascinating display of nature’s power and beauty.

Activities for Everyone

Pedernales Falls State Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re a hiker, a mountain biker, a bird watcher, or a water sports lover, the park has something for you.

Hiking and Biking

The park boasts a variety of trails ranging from easy to challenging. The Twin Falls Nature Trail offers a scenic overlook of the falls, while the six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail takes you around Tobacco and Wolf mountains, along the small canyons created by Mescal and Tobacco creeks. For the more adventurous, the new Juniper Ridge Trail provides a 10-mile technical, single-track trail with plenty of obstacles for advanced riders.

Swimming and Paddling

The Pedernales River is a popular spot for swimming, wading, tubing, canoeing, and kayaking. However, swimming and wading in the Pedernales Falls area are not allowed for safety reasons. The access to the swimming area involves a strenuous 1/4-mile hike, including steep rock stairs.

The park offers a variety of camping options, from sites with water and electricity to primitive hike-in sites. There are also group camps for youth and equestrian groups.

Horseback Riding

Horse lovers can enjoy a 10-mile rugged trail that is very rocky with some steep slopes. Please note that horses should have shoes, and you must present current Coggins for your horse at the office.

Safety First

The park often experiences flash flooding, which can cause the river to rise rapidly. Visitors are advised to be alert to weather conditions and leave the river area immediately if the water starts rising or getting muddy.
